During the First World War (1914 – 1918) no formal showcase was made of South Africa’s involvement in that war. In 1940, Capt. J. Agar-Hamilton was appointed official historian of the Union Defence Forces. The formation of an Historical Research Committee that same year was to ensure the preservation of documents and military memorabilia and lay the foundation for the establishment of a museum

Ditsong Museums of South Africa is an amalgamation of eight museums. This museum is home to Mrs Ples (the nickname attributed to a fossil skull believed to represent a distant relative of all humankind), and it houses the finest collection of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects as well as a remarkable display of fossils, pre-historic man and geological and archaeological material.

Some 220 000 years ago a blazing stony meteorite the size of half a football field slammed into the earth’s crust. The impact formed a huge crater, 1.4 km in diameter and 200 m deep. This crater is one of the best-preserved meteorite impact craters in the world.

Pretoria Art Museum

Pretoria Art Museum

It is the only fine arts museum in Tshwane. The building was designed by Gordon McIntosh and Burg Doherty and the museum has built up a collection of over 3000 works. It holds a representative collection of South African Art, with the works of Pierneef and Anton van Wouw, as well as contemporary South African art and international graphic collections of 17th century Dutch art.

Voortrekker Monument and Museum

Voortrekker Monument and Museum

A national heritage site which commemorates the centenary of the Groot Trek when Dutch, French and German pioneers left the Cape in 1835 by ox-wagon to the north in search of a better life.
The monument is attached to a museum which charts the migratory patterns and focuses on the lifestyles of the Voortrekkers.
